Known for much of its life as the Scollard Opera House, this block was built in 1870 by John H. Tower, who sold it to Dr. James Scollard in 1876. Originally erected with a peak roof, it was extensively remodeled in 1885 to include a dormer-windowed mansard roof, stained glass windows, an iron balcony, and an ornamental Ironwork “Opera House” sign. During its heyday, the second floor auditorium was the community center for town meetings, school graduations. theatrical presentations, dances, recitals, basketball games, and silent movies. Entrance to the auditorium was through the double doors at left. Other remembered occupants were J. W Delahunt’s drugstore, the Victory chain grocery. Fords Market, and in the 1990’s-a restaurant and the Clinton Shoe Center.
